Monica Velez

Economist

Monica joined The CIE in 2008 as an Economist. She holds a bachelor degree in Economics from the Externado University of Colombia.

Monica worked for several years in a consultancy firm in Colombia for private and public clients, and multilateral organisations. During this time, the main areas she worked on were: economic and social effects of remittances in Colombia; and evaluation and reform of the fiscal control system and the public bank in Colombia. Prior to this, she worked for The District Planning Department of Bogota (Colombia) and The Colombian National Federation of Oil Palm Growers.

Monica’s most recent experience at TheCIE includes contributing to a Regulation Impact Statement on a proposal by the Australian Government to restrict the sale of illegally logged timber imports. This involved:
  • assessing the economic rationale for intervention and its effectiveness;
  • understanding the benefit–cost framework for assessing environmental, economic and social impacts on Australia;
  • consulting closely and effectively with stakeholders in industry and government; and
  • ensuring all predefined elements of a RIS are conducted to a standard acceptable to the OBPR.

Monica can be contacted at our Canberra office.
