Lauren Retief

Economist

Lauren joined TheCIE in 2009 as an Economist. Lauren holds a dual degree: Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Arts with Majors in International Relations and Spanish, from the University of Queensland. She has several years of experience working in both the public and private sectors.

Since joining TheCIE, Lauren has worked on a wide range of issues including:

  • natural resource economics (water, landuse, forestry, gas);
  • agriculture (horticulture, live exports, meat, sugar, forestry);
  • regulatory economics (housing industry and new/emerging technologies);
  • taxation policy;
  • industrial relations issues;
  • public investment decisions such as R&D; as well as
  • industry strategic policy direction.
Lauren has gained significant experience and skills in many areas, including:
  • spreadsheet-based economic modelling and sensitivity analysis;
  • the use of the CIE's inhouse economic models including several sectoral-specific models (Hi_Link and the Global Meat Industry models) and computable general equilibrium models;
  • conducting regulation impact statements and cost-benefit analysis; and 
  • developing analytical frameworks to assess policy and industry-based issues.  

She is also highly competent in synthesising the findings of quantitative and qualitative analysis.

Prior to joining TheCIE, Lauren undertook a graduate program with the Federal Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism. She was also heavily involved in the establishment of the Queensland branch of the Oaktree Foundation, an Australian-based aid orgnisation, which has formed sustainable, international partnerships in a number of developing countries
