Andy Stoeckel

On 22 December 2025 our mentor, friend and Founding Chairman Dr Andy Stoeckel passed away.

Andy was both a remarkable person and superb economist. Andy stamped his mark on the discipline of economics, in Australia and overseas, and left a mark on all of us in the profession.

Throughout his professional life Andy challenged sloppy thinking with disciplined analysis and spearheaded new approaches to old battles, especially on the oldest of battlefields, trade policy. He was generous when he won, and optimistic when he lost. He was big hearted with a big sense of humour.

Andy rose high in the public service at a very young age, then co-founded the CIE at a time when most economists worked in comparative comfort in the public service.

Andy taught us how to do good economics in a private research firm. Forty years on (as at 2026) the CIE continues going strongly; a lasting legacy to Andy and his work.

For a good sense of the history of Australian economics in the 1980s, here are some regular columns Andy wrote for the Times on Sunday.
