Analysis of the Northern Basin Connectivity Expert Panel’s recommendations

What could proposed connectivity rule changes mean for irrigators in the northern valleys of NSW?

Connectivity, or water flowing between river valleys, is critical to sharing water fairly and supporting environmental health across NSW.

The CIE was commissioned by the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water to assess the economic impacts on irrigators of the Connectivity Expert Panel’s recommendations, which are intended to improve flows into the Barwon–Darling.

We linked hydrologic modelling with crop-based water demand modelling to estimate how the value of water to irrigators could shift over a 40-year period across the regulated northern valleys.

For the broader program context, updates, technical reports and ways to stay involved, the Department’s Northern Basin Connectivity Program webpage brings the material together, including the modelling and assessment work underpinning consideration of rule changes.
