Ben McNair

Ben joined the Canberra office of the CIE in 2016. He has 14 years’ experience applying economic analysis to policy advocacy and business planning in the water and energy industries. Prior to joining the CIE, Ben was Principal Economist at ActewAGL Distribution. Ben holds a PhD and a Bachelor of Economics with First Class Honours from the Australian National University.

Ben’s areas of expertise include:

  • Economic regulation. Ben has a strong background in economic regulation, including in relation to managing review processes, strategy, advocacy, tariff structure, revenue modelling and stakeholder engagement.
  • Water and energy. Ben has in-depth experience in the water and energy network industries, including in relation to economic regulation, demand forecasting, service level evaluation and cost-benefit analysis.
  • Choice modelling / conjoint analysis. Ben is highly experienced in undertaking technically rigorous choice modelling projects and applying estimates of willingness to pay to public policy and business planning. He has managed or advised on projects relating to energy, water and sewerage network reliability, overhead-to-underground conversion of electricity networks, water supply security, water recycling, and biodiversity.
